the web development process

(It is presumed that the exercises in the estimate process have been completed)

At this point we should have a stack of pictures and copy ready to be worked into one or several distinct documents (web pages).

I. Architecture

The first step is to finalize a structure for the site. Using the site mockup you've made on paper as a guide, I'll make sure everything has a home, and visitors will be able to find what they're looking for with ease. This process comes first, because it gives me an opportunity to review the content and understand exactly what is being communicated. I'll also scan photos and key in text at this time, if necessary.

II. Design and Graphics

Now I'll develop a 'look and feel' for the site that compliments your business' image. A banner for each page, custom mouse buttons, and other design elements are created to enhance the aesthetics and function of the site.

III. Initial Approval

At this point I'll have a mockup of a page or two for you to look at, comment on, and approve (or not). Once you're happy with the appearance, development resumes.

IV. Assembly

Everything comes together at this point. Text is imported and pages coded to display in an attractive and readable manner. Things also fall apart here -- good ideas go bad, others are replaced by new and better ideas. We'll be in close contact during this stage, because no matter how well you plan, there are always aspects you don't see until you're actually in development.

V. Proofing and Final Approval

The site is published to the server -- "made live," in tech jargon. I expect the client (or an assigned agent) to be the final proofreader. Proofing your own work is just a plain bad idea in the first place, and proofing on-screen is far more difficult than it is on paper. Don't believe me? Take this test:

Count how many times you see the letter F in the following sentence:

"Finished files are the result of years of scientific study combined with the experience of years." (The answer is at the bottom of this page).

At this point I'll be only making simple corrections. If you decide to change designs at this point, we'll need to talk further.

VI. Search Engine Submissions

The submission process is quirky and subject to change -- knowing the ins and outs is nearly essential. Once you're 100% satisfied with your site, I'll submit it to all of the major search engines and indexes. After eight weeks, I'll evaluate the success of our ranking efforts, and make adjustments, if possible, to improve your ranking. This process is included in all estimates for a complete site.
